Marty McCormack completed a 250-mile, two-day tyre test with Hankook this week.
Driving the same A-STYLE Fiesta R5 he is using in this year’s WRC 2 series, the Northern Irishman tested eight variations of Hankook’s next generation gravel tyres at the test in Bettona, northern Italy.
“The test was focused on the product for next year and I have to say it worked very well,” said McCormack. “We were running a variation of compound, construction and tread patterns and Hankook has really come up with the goods – the tyres all had their own strong points.
“We were driving on the tyres for 20-kilometre loops on the first day and 40-kilometre loops on the second day, so we definitely worked them hard. The guys will now take away all the data from the test and come up with the perfect tyres for next year.”
With the focus firmly on tyre development, the team remained on the same stretch of Umbrian road and with the Fiesta in a base gravel set-up to maintain consistency through the running.
As well as working hand-in-hand with Hankook, McCormack said the test offered invaluable seat time ahead of the second event in his 2014 WRC 2 programme, Rally Italia (June 5-8).
“It was fantastic to spend two days in the Fiesta R5,” he said. “Rally of Portugal was my first time in a four-wheel drive car of this nature, so driving 400 kilometres was a great chance for me to get good experience before we go to Sardinia for our next event.”
McCormack’s 2014 WRC 2 programme is backed by TigerRisk and Hankook.
