Turkey Run Rally

Marty McCormack and David Moynihan round out a successful 2012 with 2nd overall in their first outing in a WRC car and showing his intentions for 2013. The Draperstown based former British Junior Rally Champion made his WRC debut in a McGeehan Motorsport prepared Mini world rally car on the popular Turkey Run Rally based around the remains of the Shackleton military camp in Co. Derry.

The conditions were tricky, as overnight rain caused standing water and slippery sections on this mostly sealed surface rally. Marty and Cork based navigator David having completed no pre-event testing in the car were setting out with no real expectations but instead choosing to use the event as a high speed test for a potential WRC campaign in 2013.

As the entry list boasted a strong line up of both 2 litre older specification WRC cars in addition to another Mini JCW WRC, which was in the hands of preparation expert Derek McGeehan, the event would prove a good benchmark to pit their pace in the new car against some experienced opposition.

Both Marty and David settled well into the event, setting a consistent string of top 3 times whilst adapting to the unique challenges of driving a new generation WRC car. Marty’s reward was to be a firm second overall scoring a fastest stage time on the penultimate stage to top off what was a successful day.

Marty said at the finish “We wanted to just come out and get to grips with a proper 4WD car again……after out great run on Corsica where we were in an S2000 car but very much in at the deep end. I never expected to be on the podium and definitely not second! Today was a great result and shows the potential of the car”

Marty is now working hard to pull together a sponsorship deal which sees him compete at the highest level again in 2013. you can follow all of the updates, news and media on
