Marty McCormack’s latest victory on the Welsh based Red Kite Stages at the weekend past, secures the new championship title for himself and his Welsh co-driver Phil Clarke in the inaugural West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship.
2013 saw the introduction of this immensely popular rally championship for historic specification cars based around the format of the popular Roger Albert Clark historic rally.
Taking to the series in his now infamous red BDA engined escort Marty was in the midst of a titanic battle all year long. In a championship where the cars run almost identical specification, it really was a case of anyone could win with local specialists and seasoned competitors to battle with on each round. The popularity of this rally championship has gone from strength to strength with spectators flocking in their droves to see the action and nip tuck battles up close.
The forests were lined with spectators as Marty entered the famous Red Kite Stages knowing that securing the overall championship on this round was a mathematical possibility with a 1st Historic car finish.
The popular Draperstown driver never looked troubled as he and Phil danced through the forests of Wales in the BDA Ford Escort setting fastest times on every stage of the day to give them yet another straight victory on this Historic series and put their championship beyond doubt.
The pair were raring to go from the start, in the family prepared Escort which had been out as safety car on the recent Sunset rally only just last weekend.
Setting the fastest time on every stage of the Red Kite event showed Marty putting on a display worthy of his talents, arriving at the finish ramp Marty was keen to pay tribute to his co-driver Phil by admitting, “I couldn’t do what Phil does and I can only be as committed to my lines through the forests because of my trust in what Phil tells me.”
Still to come this year will be Marty’s defence of his Roger Albert Clark 2012 victory. This marathon event will test the best of crews as they battle day and night through tough conditions! Watch this space.
Marty as ever, was keen to thank his sponsors Peter McCormack and Sons, Kumho Tyres, Ian Millar Fabrication and PPP Group for their continued support.
