Marty McCormack is hoping for a continued run of good pace at this weekend’s ADAC Rallye Deutschland following a superb eighth place in Rally Ypres, Belgium, and a fourth overall in his local Tour of the Sperrins Rally.
Rallye Deutschland has been not been kind to Marty in the past. Last year was his first attempt at the rally with navigator Phil Clarke. The pair failed to finish the event, but showed great pace and had been as high as seventh overall in the WRC 2 category, driving the Tiger Risk Ford Fiesta R5.
This year Marty will use the Skoda Fabia S2000 that he has campaigned to great effect so far this season. Navigator James O’Reilly returns to guide Marty through vineyards and military ranges that make up the German rally route.
The rally gets underway on Thursday night with a ceremonial start taking place outside the stunning Porta Nigra in the historic German city of Trier. The rally itself starts on Friday when the crews tackle eight tough stages in vineyards above Trier. With recent rain these stages are already treacherous with standing water and mud. They will prove a real challenge for the opening day of the event. The crews will then compete on nine more stages on Saturday, followed by a final four stages on Sunday to finish the rally.
Marty completed a test in the Tiger Risk Skoda Fabia S2000 on Monday and is really looking forward to the event, “I am delighted to compete in Rallye Deutschland for the second time. The knowledge I gained from last year should really help us get a good result. We had a very beneficial test in wet conditions on Monday where we worked with the setup of the car. I now have great confidence in the car in wet conditions. Rallye Deutschland is an extremely tricky rally in dry conditions, but to add rain into the mix is going to be treacherous! Unlike last year, I want to get to the finish and also show that I have the pace to compete at the top level of the sport.”
